We are always looking for special rugs as we travel little touched parts of the Himalaya. We discovered this antique tiger rug in an old home of Mustang's royal family while trekking in the restricted Mustang area high in the Himalaya. The wool rug has a wonderful tiger design, with a rare backbone design that I have not seen before. It was being used as a traditional khaden, with family members sitting on it during the day, and using it as a warm mattress at night. As soon as we walked into the room and saw this rug, we knew it would clean up to be true gem.
Whether you hang this rug on the wall or display it on the floor, it will be a stunning centerpiece in your home and a collector's piece for Tibetan and Mustangi history and culture lovers.

This handsome antique rug was handmade in Baotou in north central China. The expert use of indigo in this carpet is noteworthy, as the craftsman is able to expertly incorporate several shades of blue.
The rug has numerous interesting design elements starting with the medallion in the middle. It is then surrounded by several borders including a pearl border and a T-shape meander border. The outside border has a joined swastika, or yungdrung lagdel, design and two small medallions. Perhaps the most beautiful part of this rug are the various orange flowers and fruit whose color perfectly complement the blue indigo.

This antique Tibetan meditation rug is a true gem! Checkerboard is an old style in Tibet and this red and blue design is very unique. Outside the checkerboard is a blue and white pearl border, surrounded by a meander border. The outermost red border is filled with flowers and scholarly emblems. This handmade rug was likely woven in Shigatse, Tibet over 100 years ago.
This piece could be displayed on the wall as a cultural treasure or used for your own personal meditation.

Antique Tibetan Peony Rug

This wonderful antique Tibetan rug is likely made in the Khampa district of Eastern Tibet over 80-90 years ago. It was originally designed as a khaden, to be used as a cushion on a bed and has thick, luxurious wool pile. The carpet displays two large peony plants on a dark blue field, surrounded by a thin light blue border. The outer border is a light brown tan with colorful double dorje designs.
Whether you hang this rug on the wall or display it on the floor, it will be a warm centerpiece in your home and a cultural collector's piece.
