This work by Nepal’s contemporary religious master artist Udaya Charan Shrestha is named Shakti, meaning ‘the power of the universe’ in Sanskrit. It depicts the goddess Mahalaxmi, one of the eight mother goddesses, or Asta Matrika, of the Kathmandu Valley. She is depicted as the principle deity and the other seven goddesses, Sapta Matrika, can be seen below her in the triangles. This painting is in the permanent collection of the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in Japan. This stunning piece highlights Udaya’s groundbreaking style through its intricate detail, contemporary sensuality and creative originality.
This original thangka, or paubha in Nepal, is painted in the traditional manner with a twist. Rather than paint with ground mineral pigments, Udaya paints primarily with oil paint on primed cotton canvas. He is a master of detail as can be seen in the incredible jewelry, ornaments and beautiful face. A painting of this size and complexity will take many months to compose, sketch and complete.
