This is the mantra of Avalokitesvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, who guards the world in the time between the historical Shakyamuni Buddha and the future Buddha, Maitreya. Avalokitesvara vowed that he would would not rest until he had liberated all beings from suffering, and his famous mantra can be found throughout the Himalaya.
