Torana by Mukti Singh Thapa

This work by master artist Mukti Singh Thapa is named Torana. It depicts four animals that often adorn the torana, the decorative framework that surrounds Buddhist and Hindu deities in paintings and sculpture and is also used as entranceways in temples. From bottom to top, the four animals are an elephant, snow lion, and the mythical kinnara and shardula. This graceful piece displays Thapa's mastery of the 13th - 16th century Newar Design style through its precise lines and use of traditional iconography, and creativity in designing this composition.
