Ganesh by Mukti Singh Thapa

This mesmerizing work by master artist Mukti Singh Thapa is of the red, twelve-armed, dancing Ganesh. While traditionally a Hindu deity, this depiction of the elephant-headed Ganesh, or Binayak, is from the Sakya School of Tibetan Buddhism. It depicts Ganesh dancing inside a stylized rock cave, framed by an intricate white torana, while standing on a jewel-spitting rat. This spectacular piece displays Thapa's mastery of the 14th - 16th century Newar Design style through its rich color palette, precise lines and scroll patterns, and use of traditional iconography.
This original thangka, or paubha in Nepal, is painted in the traditional manner with ground mineral pigments on primed cotton canvas. Ganesh is painted with rich red cinnabar and the gold ornaments, such as the crown and instruments, are painstakingly painted with 24 carat gold. A painting of this large size will take several months to compose, sketch and complete.

This work by celebrated artist Lok Chitrakar is of Avalokitesvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. He guards the world in the time between the historical Shakyamuni Buddha and the future Buddha, Maitreya. Avalokitesvara vowed that he would not rest until he had liberated all beings from suffering, and his mantra is the famous 'Om Mani Padme Hum.' This lovely watercolor displays Chitrakar’s mastery of Newar Design style through its use of traditional iconography, while also demonstrating his contemporary creativity in its natural aspects.

Maitreya by Mukti Singh Thapa (Original Only)

This exquisite painting by master artist Mukti Singh Thapa is of Maitreya, the future Buddha. It is believed that Maitreya is the successor to the present Buddha, Shakyamuni, and will appear on Earth, achieve enlightenment and teach the dharma. The piece displays Maitreya sitting on his golden throne under a garuda-topped torana, giving a prayer to his followers. Ratnasambava Buddha is depicted in the top left corner.
This stunning artwork displays Thapa's mastery of the 13th - 16th century Newar Design style through its rich color palette, precise lines, and use of traditional iconography while clearly expressing his artistic freedom and creativity. Rather than depicting the diety facing straight forward, the artist turns Maitreya to the side, opening the painting to allow for a greater story to be told.
