Life of Buddha by Mukti Singh Thapa

Size

This beautiful painting by master artist Mukti Singh Thapa depicts the Life of Buddha. In the middle is a grand stupa with a golden Shakyamuni Buddha. The story of the Buddha’s life start in the lower left corner with his birth, and subsequently shows him in his lavish palace, and then going out and witnessing the suffering of the world. The next scenes show him departing the palace, cutting his hair, and meditating under a bodhi tree. The final scenes show him gaining enlightenment, teaching and finally his death. This captivating thangka is painted in the traditional style of the 16th century and displays Thapa's mastery of this period through its rich color palette and expert use of traditional iconography.

This original
thangka, or paubha in Nepal, is painted in the traditional manner with ground mineral pigments on primed cotton canvas. But what makes this painting truly outstanding is the immense amount of gold, as seen in the entire stupa, the Buddha's skin, jewelry and other details, that were painstakingly painted with 24 carat gold. A painting of this size and detail took several months to compose, sketch and complete.
