Mukti Singh Thapa is one of Nepal's foremost traditional painters and is credited with reviving the Newar Design style from the 13th - 16th centuries. He is a master of the iconography and styles of this period, as well as the Tibetan style that originated in the 17th century and is still popular today. For each thangka, or paubha in Nepali, he designs his own original composition rather than simply copying old works. Thapa uses age-old painting techniques and paints exclusively in mineral and vegetable pigments. His rich color palette, precise lines, complex designs and unparalleled creativity have brought him acclaim in Nepal and around the world.

This fascinating artwork by master artist Mukti Singh Thapa is the Yoni Mandala. The yoni is the creative power of nature and represents the goddess Durga. The male counterpart of the yoni is the lingham, the representation of the god Shiva. Their union represents the eternal process of creation and regeneration. This piece, painted during his black and white period from 2005 - 2007, displays Thapa's mastery of the 13th - 16th century Newar Design style through its precise lines and expert use of traditional iconography, while also demonstrating his brilliant creativity in this original design.
This original thangka, or paubha in Nepal, was painted in the traditional manner with handmade blank ink on primed cotton canvas. There is no other pigment used, meaning that even one small slip of the brush will force the artist to destroy the entire work. Additionally, in only painting with black ink, Mukti is painting the negative space with the plain canvas taking prominence. This method takes considerable concentration, and a painting of this size and complexity will take several months to compose and complete.
While the original painting has sold, Mahakala Fine Arts has produced a Collector's Edition fine art print so that art lovers can enjoy this museum quality work of art. This piece is limited to 100 prints and can only be found at Mahakala Fine Arts. It is printed on thick archival paper in the same professional quality used by top museums worldwide and looks remarkably similar to the original.
